Diet As A Means Towards Weight Loss

Just as with people trying to give up smoking, and quickly abandoning their attempts, I am sure you have met people who start a “diet” to lose weight and then within days or weeks revert to their old bad habits. Changing your diet can be very difficult, especially if you try to make drastic changes too quickly. Unfortunately, many people do try to make too sudden a switch, perhaps diving straight into a fad diet to lose weight quickly.

As with any plan, it needs to be realistic to have a chance of success. Make a realistic and safe weight loss plan, and you will have the potential to bring your weight down steadily to an optimum level for your height and frame.

Once you have made your plan to lose weight, you want to avoid all the pitfalls that many people succumb to. The diet guide is intended to help you in that respect.

How Not To Ruin Your Diet Plan

Your diet is what you eat and drink. Every individual has a different diet, and there are many billions of possible combinations of food and liquid. From the moment you are conceived, to the moment you die, you are “on a diet.” Good or bad, your diet has been a part of your life from the very beginning. It is your diet, and breathing, that sustain you.

Over recent decades, of course, “I’m going on a diet” has come to mean “I’m changing what I eat and drink in an effort to lose weight”. Unfortunately, it is an expression that has tended to have connotations of being temporary. Our concept of ‘a diet’ has come to imply a temporary change that will work miracles and reduce our weight quickly. When that weight does not reduce quickly, people often become disheartened; and because your will power is essential to your long term prospects for keeping a healthy weight, being disheartened is something you cannot afford to indulge in.

In this way, let us forget about “going on a diet”. Let us think more about making changes to what we eat and drink; making changes that will become natural habits over the coming months. Eating and drinking are very much habit forming; what you will be trying to do is shift the balance from bad habits to good habits. There is no rush, so these changes can be subtle, making it feel even less like “going on a diet”.

Going on a keto diet might also imply that you will eventually come off that diet, whether through a sudden decision to abandon it, or through an insidious return to old bad habits. The best way to losing weight, and keeping it off, is to create an eating plan that will actually become your normal eating habit. What becomes your new diet will just happen to be one that is better for you health wise.

A successful weight loss plan will include a diet that is nutritionally balanced and in the right proportions. Some people following a high protein diet or keto diet fail to do this, and your body is more likely to rebel and force your submission. Developing a nutritionally balanced diet that you can enjoy is easier than you may think, and can be maintained long term like keto diet. If you dive into too restricted a diet, you are unlikely to maintain it, and your good health, for years ahead.

Common Diet Mistakes That Will Ruin Your Diet Plan

  1. Never fast for long periods without medical supervision. For the same reasons that you shouldn’t restrict your intake of calories to less than 1000 a day, you should not embark on a fast that lasts more than 2 days, without a doctor’s supervision.
  2. Never restrict your calorie intake to less than 1000 calories a day, unless you are under the supervision of a doctor. Consuming less than 1000 calories a day can lead to serious health complications. It will also convince your body that you are in danger of starving. As a consequence, your metabolism will slow, so that your body conserves stores of food. Put another way, your body will hold onto your fat so you don’t starve to death.
  3. Never purge. Purging, whether you do it by emetics, diuretics, vomit-induction or laxatives, will rob your body of more than the nutrients that you are trying to rid yourself of. It is unsafe at any speed and you can end up with far worse problems than a bit of surplus weight.
  4. Never cut out one or more entire food groups, and that includes carbs. Your body needs an adequate intake of all nutrients in order to stay healthy. Now just think about the keto diet, in every food group, you will find there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ choices for keto diets like keto-approved cream cheese or chocolates or even ice cream. Some will help you lose weight, some will lead to weight gain and some won’t affect your body weight. Do a bit of research on what is good and bad, and stick to the good ones. That way, you will see your weight dropping without compromising your health and diet.
  5. Finally, the one thing you must do is to see your doctor before starting a serious diet. He or she can recommend a visit to a nutritionist, who is professionally trained to help you design a common-sense weight loss diet plan. With that new balanced diet, you will have a weight loss plan that will naturally evolve into healthy eating habits which can last you a lifetime.
